SnuffRing Frequently Asked Questions
Current answers about the developing SnuffRing concept, its intended function, compatibility, safety, patent status, and availability.
What is SnuffRing?
SnuffRing is a removable, reusable bowl snuffer with a screen and attached lid, being developed for compatible existing water-pipe bowls, including compatible bong bowls. The current concept combines an outer ring with a handle, an inner ring carrying a tapered wire screen, and a lid that rotates between open and closed positions.
What is it designed to do?
It is designed to support loose material, help retain ash, permit access and repositioning, and restrict oxygen between uses so material does not continue burning as freely when the user is not actively drawing.
What does a bowl snuffer do?
A bowl snuffer covers a smoking bowl to restrict incoming air and help interrupt continued burning between uses. SnuffRing’s attached lid is designed for that purpose. Its effectiveness depends on fit, material, packing, and airflow; closing the lid does not guarantee complete extinguishment.
How is a bowl screen with a snuffing lid different from a screen alone?
A bowl screen supports loose material while allowing airflow. A snuffing lid adds a cover designed to restrict air between uses. SnuffRing combines the screen and attached lid in one removable accessory for a compatible existing bowl. See how the screen and lid work together.
How is SnuffRing designed to help keep ash out of bong water?
The wire screen is intended to retain loose ash above the bowl rather than allowing it to fall into the pipe and water below. It cannot be assumed to capture every particle or eliminate cleaning. Informal users have reported improved ash retention; read the early prototype observations.
Does SnuffRing replace the bowl?
No. It is intended to rest on the upper rim of a compatible existing bowl. It does not replace the bowl, connect to the downstem, or require permanent modification of the water pipe.
Will it fit every bowl?
No universal fit should be assumed. Final production dimensions and a compatibility guide remain under development and will be published before orders open.
Does the lid guarantee that material is extinguished?
No. The lid is designed to restrict ambient oxygen and may slow, retard, or extinguish continued combustion. Results depend on bowl fit, material, packing, airflow, and surrounding conditions. Never leave burning or hot material unattended.
What have prototype users reported?
A small group of informal prototype users has reported continued use of the snuffing function, less unwanted burning between uses, improved ash retention, cleaner water, and less frequent cleaning. Some users reported obtaining additional uses from material that might otherwise have continued burning.
These are anecdotal observations from informal use, not controlled test results, verified performance percentages, health claims, or guarantees. Structured testing remains necessary.
How should the screen be emptied?
Informal users found that loading only the amount intended for a single use, then inverting the cooled accessory and lightly tapping the bottom of the screen, helped remove ash before residue accumulated. Final operating and cleaning instructions will be based on the production model.
What will SnuffRing be made from?
Durable, heat-suitable materials are being evaluated. Final alloys, finishes, joining methods, screen specifications, and care requirements have not yet been selected and should not be inferred from concept renderings.
Is SnuffRing available now?
Not yet. A functioning prototype exists, and the project is moving through CAD, production engineering, prototype refinement, manufacturing planning, and commercialization preparation.
Is SnuffRing patented?
SnuffRing is patent pending. Greg and Gayla filed PCT international patent application PCT/US26/41975 on August 19, 2026. Patent pending does not mean that a patent has issued or that any particular claim will ultimately be allowed.
Can I help test SnuffRing?
Yes. Our Founding Tester Program is seeking 3–5 adults age 21 or older within approximately 100 miles of Camdenton, Missouri, for alpha testing. Participants help evaluate working prototypes and provide regular, candid feedback as the design develops. Read the program details and apply to become a Founding Tester.
How can I receive updates?
Join the weekly update list on the SnuffRing Invention Diary page for diary entries, prototype progress, compatibility information, and launch news.
Who may use SnuffRing?
SnuffRing is an adult smoking accessory intended only for lawful use by adults age 21 or older. Users are responsible for following all applicable laws and the instructions for their water pipe and related products.
